Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Ujjain
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. It is considered one of the most powerful Shiva temples and a significant center of spiritual energy for devotees across India. The temple's Shiva lingam is believed to be swayambhu (self-manifested), deriving spiritual power from within rather than being installed by human hands.
History & Mythological Significance
The temple has a rich and ancient history mentioned in Sanskrit texts like the Matsya Purana and Avanti Khanda, dating back to the 4th century BC. According to legend, King Chandrasena of Ujjain was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. During an invasion by rival kings and a demon named Dushanan, Lord Shiva manifested as Mahakal, vanquished the enemies, and agreed to stay in Ujjain as its chief deity upon the request of his devotees.
Prajapati Brahma is said to have established the first temple. The temple structure endured numerous invasions, especially being destroyed by Iltutmish in the early 13th century and later rebuilt during the Maratha period. Today, it stands as a testament to unwavering faith and spiritual grandeur.
